Bittman gets Disorderly in NYT

Actually, the Delfina he recommends is the California St. pizzeria, about five blocks down the street from me. I tried it shortly after it opened about two years ago and found it wanting and definitely inferior to the 18th St. pizzeria, which is next to the restaurant. Will have to retry.

Although he lists other Italian restaurants in the Bay Area, interesting that he leaves off Acquerello, Quince, Cotogna, and Adesso, among others.

I wish he would have just sent them all to Incanto and left the rest to us locals and the informed visitors.

Calling attention of outsiders isn't so great. Aziza got a Michelin star and has now raised its prices about 20% for the same dishes. So long, Aziza!

The Cal St place is rockin'. Agree that it started out substandard. No more. And it's a much less stressful experience of waiting.

Just had lunch there today. Superb collard greens, very good blistered pizza, solid but unexciting baked ziti with meatballs. Fat but flavorful sicilian rose'.

Yeah I should clarify that I don't get any of the mains - except the meatballs when Carson is ordering. I do like the meatballs. And the salads and greens. The rest always disappoints me.

Wine-wise, the place is pretty uninspiring. Such a shame. But corkage is fine. I tend to go with the Lioco on tap. It's appealing uncomplicated.

Has anyone had the gelatos?

The Cal. Street location of Pizzeria Delfina was very good in August, with only a modest wait on a Sunday evening, and there were even a couple nice red wines available at fair prices, including a Gulfi Cerasuolo. Of course I'm guessing that with the volume of wine they sell there such wines may not stay on the list there very long.

We also made it to Perbacco (and Bar Bacco) and La Ciccia courtesy of the recs made here. All were excellent.
