Every time I come to California, I try to taste as much as I can. Of course, comparisons among the 'whoppers' can sometimes be daunting so I usually bring nothing but French and Italian wine - a little palate recalibration can help.
Two nights ago I had the 2007 Grey Stack Cellars, The Folly, which is a 60% syrah, 40% grenache blend.
Its always hard to explain one of these rare wines that hits my sweet spot. There is enough of the Cote Rotie-type smells and flavors to make me think of the AOC as I taste. There is the CA intensity of fruit that I have come to enjoy so much, assuming it is kept in balance and not hit with wood.
This is a strikingly beautiful wine. Not overly alcoholic, complexity that I can only hope to attain in my own wines and nothing so overdone as to throw it out of balance. And if there's any new wood here, it would come as a surprise to me.
The wine has not yet been released but should sell for $32, full retail.
If that price point is something you can live with, I suggest you try this bottle.
No recalibration required.
Best, Jim
PS I'm using someone else's computer so I may not get back to it for awhile - in case there are questions.
