In Nantes:
-2002 Luneau Papin Muscadet de Svre et Maine sur Lie Grand Fief de lAudigre Sur Schist
Oxydized. Damn, I wanted to throw the bottle against the wall. Violent enough for you?
In Avignon:
-1998 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf des Papes
Gorgeous from the get-go, this is the style of Clos des Papes that I first fell in love with (not that hideous kirsch liqueur from 2003). Lots of fresh cherries and herbs, like walking through the French countryside's underbrush while dropping red fruits underfoot. Crushing analogies, sorry, yet more violence. Beautiful mouthfeel, really nicely balanced, a wine I was happy to hang out with over the course of several hours for lunch.
-2007 Sraphin Cotes du Rhone
Surprisingly nice despite its weight, with tons of minerals backing up the big, dark but balanced fruit. The finish was nice and meaty, and it went great with our assiette de charcuterie. So good I wanted to throttle anyone who got too close to the bottle.
In Paris:
-2002 Anne Gros Chambolle Musigny Combe d'Orveau
Very shy at first, but as we swirled it started coming around and showing some lacy structure with dark Pinot fruits and earthy notes. Quite nice, especially the last few glasses (of course).
-NV Champagne Tarlant Brut
Wow, the bubbles here just leaped out of the glass and tickled my nose. Quite nice, with a decent weight on the palate leading to dry peaches and lemons with a mineral mid-palate and slight herbal notes and a long, dry finish. So yummy another glass was ordered.
Cheers!
PS: OK, the notes weren't that violent, but I'm not a violent guy.
