Visiting Miami

Csar E.

Csar E. Castro
I'm going to be in Miami for a couple of days and was wondering if anyone knows of restaurants worth visiting or shops with a good selection.

Thanks.

This is going to sound like a joke, but I'm not kidding: the Cuban restaurant with the takeout window near the Miami public library is pretty good.

I miss the Cubano sandwiches that I used to have on the regular down there.

For me, the one real standout meal I had there was when at Azul when Michele Bernstein was the chef. She isn't there any longer, but you might seek out Michy's.

The thing that caught me by surprise in Miami was how the restaurants open at 7pm. I would go to places at 6pm and nothing would be open.

I would point you to Wolfe's wine shop in Coral Gables for wine purchases.

Thanks Levi, I'll check them out. By any chance do you remember the name of the restaurant near the library?

No chance. I never knew the name of the place. It has a takeout window on the street and a small, diner -like indoor seating area. If you walk out the library, veer towards you right, and go down the ramp -like walkway out, it would be directly to your right and across the street once you got out of that walkway. There used to be a shoe shine guy who worked there who was like the mayor of that corner. That guy knew everybody. Maybe he is still there.

Cesar, if you do find yourself ridiculously out of your way to the north, the breakfast and sandwich place at Lake Worth Beach (which is physically on the same island as Palm Beach) is one of my favorite restaurants in America and perhaps what I miss most about Florida. Look for the place with the line out the door about 40 people deep come 11am or so. Personally, I only ate inside once, because of that line. I would go to the takeout window, order a sandwich and a drink, and go sit on a bench overlooking the ocean. Just ignore the heavyset, older bikini set and watch the waves come in, would be my advice.

Thanks again Levi, I will definitely try to get a sandwich if I have time to drive all the way there.

I honestly thought there would be more stores a la CSW or some interesting wine bars. I'm guessing that's only a NYC thing.

I'll let you know how many of the places I end up visiting.

Well, I offer what I know, but I am also out of touch down there. So someone who knows better could probably chime in to tell you about those places.

Restaurants:
Michael's Genuine - Design District - excellent food + wine list - need a reservation
Pubbelly - Miami Beach - Asian Gastropub - all about the pork, beer, wine
Las Olas Cafe - Miami Beach - cuban sandwiches
Hiro's Yakko San - North Miami Beach - Japanese in a strip mall - go for the food, not the ambience
Lou's Beer Garden - outside bar, back of small dinky hotel, next to the pool - just beer

Wine Stores
- got a rec for Wolfe's Wine Shoppe - Coral Gables.

Levi, passed by the sandwich place today, it was closed around 9pm apparently it's no longer operating. Also went by Wolfe's got a couple of bottles to enjoy over the next couple of days. Once again thanks for the information.

Sorry that the tip on the cubano was out of date. I hope you didn't go too far out of your way in finding out.

Thanks for the tip, this type of thing happens every once in a while.

Any updates here? Going to find myself briefly in Miami this weekend and am looking for an interesting place to try Saturday night. Good food being more important than good wine this particular time.

Wolfe's for wine.

Casa Tua is super douchy, but amazing at the same time. Many things you want to drink on the list. The only place to visit in South Beach.

Mandolin has amazing greek food. Lovely outdoor seating. Nice list.

Versailles is in the Cuban part of town. Super cheezy, but must be visited. Amazing coffee, and pork.

Michael's Genuine is great.

Lagniappe is a blast, decent wines on offer, great (retail) pricing. Amazing garden and cool bands.
