Is this in a "good place" or not??
Plenty of other wine to choose from
 
Not a direct response, but we opened a 1996 CFE last night, which was tight and young on opening, drank well later, and is positively dreamy right now (the leftovers, sequestered in a 375 bottle). The capsule on this bottle was domed, btw, suggesting some poor handling on the way.

Not CSH, but perhaps a useful data point. My 2 cents would be to hold or decant long.

but I agree about 96 Frederic Emile. Young but can be so good after some air.
