ESJ 2001 Peay Vineyard Zinfandel

From the recent library release. Big wine. Old school Zin character. Spice, currants and something menthol like that I associate with cooler climate sites. Still incredibly young. 15.2 alcohol is noticeable but not offensive. Overall a very enjoyable and unique wine.

Anyone know anything about Zinfandel and Peay Vineyards? I can't seem to find any other examples? Was it an experiment?

I seem to remember Steve saying that the owner planted zinfandel there hoping that the cool climate would produce a very different (i.e. less ripe) example of zinfandel. That didn't fully pan out so they took up the vines in 2002.
