Far better than I expected. Though somewhat low acid, not overwhelmed by ripeness. Perfect drinking right now.

It's a Chateauneuf. Never one of my favorites, but usually OK. I believe they added a special cuvee version in the aughts which was a horror show (as opposed to horrorshow).

BJ has been regaling us lately with tasting notes of under the radar Southern Rhone wines from less renowned years with a lot of age on them. I am fascinated. A 97 that is still drinking well doesn't surprise me. But those 92s and 93s he is opening and describing as at the height of their existence certainly have me rethinking what I thought.

I have a reputation for preferring my wines on the older side, but I don't see it that way. I would actually say the 92s and 93s I've been posting on are slightly on the back side of their peak maturity, but not badly so. Those vintages in particular I think needed some time to loosen up and so I'm guessing they had fairly limited windows of pleasure; however I say that without having experienced them in their youth. I am nowadays actually sliding my prefered Grenache window towards the 10-15 year range, though that certainly is a generalization.

My favorite CNP vintage for current drinking is 99. It was just a wonderful year. Lots of folks who favor northern wines are really missing out on the cooler vintage southern Rhones, there's a lot of pleasure out there to be had. The only vintage from the aughts I would touch now are 2000s, and I've actually been enjoying those for a while.

I'm completely on board with the 99s. A lot of my 04s are drinking well now, though, as, amazingly, are 05s, though they probably are a lot younger than you like them. I always buy enough of these so I can start drinking them at 6-8 years and keep them through 15-20, depending upon how they do at ages 10-12. But I did drink up most of my 92s and 93s by the time they were 10. None of mine did that well for me as they aged. Maybe I should have just been more patient.

I'm on board with you both about the '99s and I will confess to still hanging on to a few '89s and '90s, but that's mostly Beaucastel (I'm an amateur bacteriologist at heart). I expect to get to some of the lighter '98s as well over the next few years, then maybe some '00s. I'm not going to broach my '01s for a good long while, though.

Most 01s are still on the beginning side of their prime, though few are still desultory adolescents. I'm holding back after tasting a bunch this year. The Charvin, though, is wonderful.

Lots of fine 89s and 90s still for sure.

Necrophilia.

After around 2000, I wasn't able to keep my hands off of my 89s and 90s, alas. Final bottles of numbers of them last year were generally wonderful and I expect they still are. I do still have some 90 Beaus, thankfully, but they are dwindling.

Chateauneuf was still making good wine back then.
