05 Guindon Coteaux de la Loire Muscadet

My appreciation for this wine grows every time I have it - a different thing than the downriver Muscadets. Salty, peanuty, different earth tones, with a weighty minerality. Also at times a nod toward Savennieres - there is some kind of terroir affinity it seems to me. Lots of complexity and interest here. This has improved too. Unfortunately I didn't by more of this vintage, which is great.

I bought a few of these from the Pied Hyper of Seattle and was disappointed. It was more fruit than mineral driven and rather soft in the middle, and certainly lacking the sharpish edges I desire from Muscadet.

If I remember correctly this was the "Cuve Prestige".

I got mine from different sources - it is locally imported through Tom Calder via Triage. This too was a Cuvee Prestige. I guess I had a somewhat different take - it feels pretty minerally to me, and though not as precise as some Muscadets I wouldn't call it soft. But I hear where you're coming from. It took me a while to take off the Sevre et Maine overlay and let it be a different thing - but not that you should.

Brad, very interesting point. I'd never thought of it in such terms and in fact had it incorrectly entered in CT as Sevre et Maine.

You've probably already scoped it out on the maps, but it's upriver a bit, on the north side. I had actually thought it was further upriver but it's just a bit.

There was info on Becky Wasserman's site about it (I didn't realize they imported it - I may not be right about Calder) and it says the vines for the wine were planted in 1960.
