Crmant de Loire: damn.

Opened this night a 2001 Langlois Crmant de Loire Rserve.

Three days of intense champagne will see subsequent posts, but this one was remarkable: split three ways between chenin blanc, chardonnay and cabernet franc (yes! amazing), it was serious, utterly elegant, deep and balanced. A gorgeous wine that paired admirably with my broccoli and goat cheese quiche.

Henry Vizetelly wrote an interesting chapter about Sparkling Saumur in his 1882 "A History of Champagne with Notes on Other Sparkling Wines of France."

You could read that chapter here at Google Books.

One good quote:

good to know Sharon...i have the '02 on order along with the '00 quadrille (which in addition to the 3 varieties above, also has a smidge of cab sauv)

i liked their 100% cfranc brut rose well enough too

SFJOE...the winedoc has a good write up on this producer

What do we know about the producer?

They were bought by Bollinger several years ago, and M. Bettane compares the 1996 to "something from the maison mre." I have to say the 2001 rocks.

Tasted the rest of their lineup Friday and was less impressed (I had already bought the 2001 at a wine store and had it at home, so no going back), including the Quadrille, an amusing thing for its four weird varieties (as Joel notes, chenin, chardonnay, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon in equal parts).

According to the guy, they are phasing out the cabernet sauvignon and phasing in pinot noir as we speak.

Not an artisanal concern, but quite lovely, this bottle.

Never had their sparkling wine, but it sort of makes sense that it might be good. Otherwise they are a large, cynical producer of crappy industrial wine beverage in a host of local appellations.

Thanks for the note. I will definitely have to seek out some of this.

might be vintage dependent...i am having the 02 now and it is not remarkably better than the nv. nice lemon notes, but clipped tannic finish.

It definitely is, alas - the 2002 was one of the ones tasted during last Friday's thing, and it was pretty ho-hum, with a definite bitter finish - whence the surprise over the 2001.
