Sandy

It's blowing pretty hard. Looks like the subways are going to flood downtown. Scattered blackouts down there -- and the CSW server is out of commission.

When thinking of what you guys are facing, I can't help but hark back to when Ike was barging in and we knew it was "our storm".

I saw somewhere that the potential looters are already using the social media to plan their scavenging (if scavenging is the right word).

All good wishes!

. . . . . Pete

Very windy in the Western Catskills, not much rain. Supposed to really hit around 10 pm. Somehow we still have power and Internet. No small miracle in rural NY even when there's not a hurricane.

I am in downtown Manhattan, three blocks from the river, but still with electricity and incredibly, wifi (inch'Allah). Loud wind. Lotsa rain. No real excuse for drunkenness, except that you can't really walk outside (n.b., is that an excuse for drunkenness?).

I'm in w. village, 1 block from zone A, 2 blocks from the other river (or actually the river rather than the dangerous tidal estuary to which Sharon refers). So far so good. It turns out low pressure favors '01 Altzinger Frauenweingarten GV federspiel. Unbeleivablly gorgeous wine. Lithe and snappy. Laser-sharp. just ripe enough. Not a single thing out of balance.

It's a little windy on the Upper East Side, but I really don't expect any real problems here. Waiting for Dan Fredman to get here so we can jeeb hurricane style.

High winds in the extreme Northeast favour 2010 Chanrion Cote de Brouilly. A classic bottle of CdB. Hold this, while drinking the 2011, at least for now.

Moving on to '07 foilard 3,14. Auspicious on first sip from newly opened bottle. Radio says 13+ foot surge at the Battery. >6 ft above flood stage.

In Brooklyn, huge winds right now, strongest yet. 2007 Gilles Cornas is a beauty. Lights have flickered a couple times but, undeterred, we're about to get into the Netflix.

The storm surge here in Zone B is unprecedented. The pier that's usually 6-8 feet above the waterline is now submerged on the far end. And high tide's still an hour away.

Wind has calmed a lot in the last two hours after being rather alarming earlier in the day.

I thought this visualization linked in today's Washington Post was interesting.

The wind is howling in central Pennsylvania, probably in the mid-20's mph-wise. It's supposed to get worse over the next day. It has been raining most of the day, but not (yet) heavily. My wife works for an electric company, so she's been run ragged. We have power, so things are good for now. But the storm is still a long way away.

I stir fried a bunch of odds and ends for dinner and opened a Hermann Wiemer 2009 Semi-dry Finger Lakes Riesling to go with it. The wine was pleasant, aromatically open, nicely crisp, and suited the meal well. Being inside, warm, and dry on a miserable evening didn't hurt.

With inlaws in Philly and NJ, I've been following the reports rather closely from my safe remove. Paired with angst-ridden fretting was a three-day-old bottle of 2010 Occhipinti SP68, which washed down the roast chicken and stir-fried veggies just fine.
