Visit at Castell

I am drinking the Hohnart Kabinett 2007 currently (last few days) and yes, it is the only wine I bought in 2007 from the Estate.

To me Hohnart remains their best vineyard or, to put it more correctly, the vineyard that matches best the Estate's style. Schlossberg is maybe of the same level of quality, but I systematically find that the Estate is pushing too much the boundaries (extraction, alcohol, late harvesting) on this one.

The true gems at the Estate are the cellar treasures and especially the Hohnart 67, which is by far the greatest single Silvaner I ever had.

I was able to buy some bottles of the '67 and have opened one bottle. A great wine indeed. TN will come later. Castell can make such great wines so. I bought up some older cheap silvaners while I was in Franken and have been mostly very satisfied with the results. Also a single bottle of the '63 Silvaner Hohnart, but have not opened this yet.

Sorry for late reply. Have been away for some days (picking up more bottles). The wines I bought were cheap (most in the 5-7 range) and I bought uncritically everything I could buy. It was kind of taking a chance and see what you end up with after you have opened the bottles:

-Grosslangheimer Kiliansberg silvaner sptlese 1979, GWF
-Rdelseer Kchenmeister silvaner sptlese 1976, GWF
-Sommeracher Rosenberg mller-thurgau sptlese 1976, Winz Nordheim
-Escherndorfer Eulengrube silvaner Cabinet 1966, Winz Escherndorf
-Casteller Hohnart Silvaner 1963, Castell
-Escherndorfer Perle 1963, Juliusspital
-Nordheimer Vgelein 1962, Ott

Then there was the bottles I bought at Castell. The '67 Hohnart and '85 Schlossberg silvaner sptlese trocken.

Short comments: The '67 Hohnart was a tremendous bottle. The '85 Schlossberg was an extreme dry and slim silvaner. Very mineral, high acidic wine. Good, but not for everyone. The Kiliansberg had some oxidation although still drinkable and recognizable as an old silvaner. The Kchenmeister was a positive surprise. Very pure silvaner-fruit for such a producer and vintage. Although a little low in acid, a nice bottle. Even more surprising was the '76 mller-thurgau. Also very low in acid, but nice fruit. Simpler and spicey. The Eulengrube was another surprisingly great bottle. Very silvanerish. Fine purity and complex aged fruit. Starting to get slightly over the top, but still nice fruit and no oxidation. The two '63's have not been opened yet. The '62 was shot. Totally oxidized and the only undrinkable bottle so far.

i also enjoyed the 85 schlossberg - but it is level 4 stuff. The eulengrube (part of Lump now i think) cabinet must have been a lovely wine. I am looking forward to a 66er castell hohnart perl, which is patiently waiting in my cellar.

the 67 is incredible isn't it: it was a tip off from egon mller ... he sure knows the good stuff.
