Naughty or Gneiss?

2006 Domaine de l'Ecu (Guy Bossard) Expression de Gneiss, Muscadet Serve et Maine, alc 12%, $15: Nose of sweet lemon curd..more diffuse and soft than expected on the palate..bit of quinine and grapefruit rind...a disappointing lack of crispness and focus...maybe just too young?.. maybe some damage?...maybe the "style" of this particular wine?

I haven't had the wine in a few years, but past vintages certainly haven't lacked for crispness and focus. Maybe they've spit the bit and aimed at a more diffuse, dilute style in the past couple of years?

2004 was the last vintage that I had and while less focused than the granite version I thought it was quite delineated. I haven't had anything from Bossard in '06 yet.

The Gneiss usually has focus to spare. The Orthogneiss is generally the broader textured. '06 though, there might be some of the issue right there.

I'm with Levi. 2006 was a suddenly hot, ripe vintage in the Muscadet that did not in general produce the most transparent wines. Various problems for producers less wonderful than Bossard that I won't get into.
