Dinner and a bunch of Clos Baudoin

Saturday night started with salmon eggs and a nice, tight Cava that a friend of mine imports. The entrée was broiled halibut steaks marinated in chermoula with 2001 Belle Hermitage Blanc. (I’m not a big consumer of Rhone whites so this one is going to take a while to fully digest.)

A friend brought two bottles of Clos Baudoin for dessert, a 97 Prince Poniatowski moelleux and a 2005 Chidaine sec. It was a blast to drink these two side by side. I tend toward drier wines in general but the 97 was just singing. All that sweet chenin stuff most everyone likes with a juicy acidity to balance and chalk not far behind. The 2005 was nice, too, though it seemed like it could be getting a bit soft.

Coincidentally, another friend brought a bottle of 2010 Chidaine Clos Baudoin sec to the table a few weeks ago. I have good friends. Though I did not take notes on this wine I want to say that it was a bit sweeter and livelier than the 2005 but it was also sitting among dry reds for the most part.

In conclusion: Clos Baudoin, M’f’ers!(tm)

Because it was only 30 minutes after midnight and who gives a shit about Daylight Savings Time I walked a bottle of Jaboulet Cotes du Ventoux to another friend’s studio to wind down the evening. These are the perils of walkable neighborhoods it’s easy to convince yourself to keep the party going when you have a bunch of friends within a half mile hike that also like to stay up until five in the morning. At any rate, the Jaboulet is a nice chewy Rhone for the price if you’re into that sort of thing.
