TN: Domaine de la Soumade

These were poured at Max Gerstls annual Burgundy arrivage tasting in Zurich, this year held on the 21st of November. How much sense that makes I do not know, but they certainly did not suffer from the comparison to the Pinots.

Domaine de la Soumade Ctes-du-Rhne 2006
Simple and a bit hot, but inartificial and uncomplicated, and fairly priced. Rating: 85

Domaine de la Soumade Gigondas 2006
Creamy Port-like fruit, some garrigue, pepper especially, quite zesty but a bit tired already. Rating: 87+/-?

Domaine de la Soumade Rasteau Cuve Confiance 2004
So oxidative one would think it had been opened more than a week earlier. Weird. Rating: N/R

Domaine de la Soumade Rasteau Cuve Fleur de Confiance 2006
Concentrated and dense, old-viney it seems, relatively complex, a bit chocolaty, just short of alcoholic, medium length on the finish. Promising enough in a style I am having a hard time to appreciate (increasingly so, to be honest), I would give this some time to sort itself out. Rating: 89+/90?

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

I never quite understand the hype with these, esp. the more expensive cuvees, which he ruins with oak. The Prestige usually seems like the best of the bunch (I think because it's in tank?).

All too frequent, hlas...

That has been my take as well.

For the record, I like the Confiance. The Fleur gets too oaky for me. I do remember a very positive note on a Fleur from Joe Dressner years ago on Therapy, but he may have been being ironic.
