CDD: Are you a wine connoisseur?

(How do you define yourself?)

Or a oenophile?
Or a wine geek?
Or a wine lover?
Or a wino?
OR ...

I feel quite uncomfortable with the term wine connoisseur..it conjures up a stuffy old man with a tarnished tastevin around his neck and an attitude that won't quit!!

What term do you prefer?

No good answer exists to this sandpit of a question.

Though some of us go by "lush."

That can almost sound like a compliment! If only one were a lawn.

According to my aunt, who is in AA, I am an alcoholic.

According to my friends who don't share my wine habit, I'm strange and obsessive.

Compared to some people for whom wine is an avocation, I'm positively sane.

'Drunkard' is my preferred term, though if someone else describes me as a winegeek I don't respond with physical violence.

I think the polite Australian term for someone with a longstanding interest in wine is "a pisspot from way back"...

I was at a dinner party, and the girlfriend of a friend I was talking to asked me, "Are you a Somalier?" My girlfriend whispered in her ear, "He's just passionate."

A buddy of mine heard the following exchange go down a few years back...

Guest at a restaurant: Do you have a Sommelier here?

Waitress in response: We don't have any Somalians working here right now, but we do have a few Nigerians and one guy from Bangladesh.

Same dude told me this story...

Guest at a restaurant: We want a bottle of white chardonnay tonight.

Waiter: Oh good, because we just ran out of the red.
