CWD: '06 Grosjean Torrette

2006 Grosjean Torrette, Vallee d'Aoste DOC, alc 12.5%, $22: Pale light red color...earthy nose with a hint of flowers...starts out light but with a Beaujolais-like crispness...then turns more soft and dark with black cherry and raspberry notes...very fresh and "bright" overall but not overly complex (yet?)...enjoyable

(intially posted as "C"orrette due to the ridiculous label font that was undecipherable)

I agree. Fun wine, good with food, but nothing to get hot and bothered about.

That being said, I have a lot of admiration of wines that are fun and good with food, because, well, I pretty much drink wine with food.

I recently tried the Grosjean Petite Arvine 2006(?). It was really a treat. It had a nice floral tone that sank into a rich and round mid-palate. But what really made the thing sing to me was the acidity in the finish - perfectly balancing the body and (here we go) making it a great food wine.

I also like the Gamay.

I too drink my wines mostly at the dinner table (well, sometimes at lunch...) so wines that have balance and work with food are generally my preference.

Is that they are really good wines at the table, but not priced that way.

I used to drink them quite a bit.

I love these, too. Isn't it the "T"orrette? Also agree on pricing. Anyone have any idea how these age? I assume more or less like Trousseau.

(in fact, one of those staff picks of mine at ASS now with someone else's face on my text that I mentioned last night is for this very wine), but when I had it about ten days ago, I felt it had less stuffing than I remembered in the 2003 and 2005. Among the current releases, I prefer the Les Crtes Torrette and Noussan Cuv de la Cte.

How is the basic 2006 Gamay? I was unfamiliar with the wines until recently, and I believe the bottle I picked up is just their Gamay. I was planning to open it up soon, so I could pick up more if I liked it. I paid about $19. I don't know if this is a good price or not.

At first, I thought this was another music thread about Prince, but realized the typo. Not a fan of the Grosjean. Rather go with their neighbour Les Crettes for the same lineup.

It's been awhile, but I found the gamay to be a nice little wine. It had hints of red fruit, but none of that Beaujolais banana-cake thing. Nice depth, with a sense of stuffing. But what really made it work for me was the minerality. It was like licking a dew covered stone.

While the wine is somewhat simple, it is a good example of the transparency of the gamay grape.

Grosjean Freres Gamay 2006, Valle d' Aosta-

So I popped this open this evening. Jack, I pretty much agree with you. Smells of fresh berries and strawberry jelly. I hated strawberry jelly when I was growing up. When my mother would pick up strawberry jelly at the grocery store, I would go behind her, pick it up and put it back on the shelf and grab grape jelly instead. Now I like neither one, but maybe it is a good thing I stopped eating those sweet things, because this wine is quite pleasant. I don't know if it is the vintage, but I'm not getting much minerality. However, the finish is quite long (I'm talking minutes here, very candy-like, jolly rancher to be specific) despite being so singular in its depth. Of course, I'm sure Beth and I will be finished drinking this before I give it a chance to open up. It is one of those wines that is very "drinkable."

I don't know their winemaking techniques; I can't imagine any new oak, if any oak at all was used, but I get some nice grip on the very back end. Hmmph.

Classy... your text.. someone else's face...perhaps a new low...perhaps HOLE needs to be added to the name!!

Sorry, maybe someone can step in and act as translator.

And sorry for the misspellings.

I went through a couple of bottles of the 2006 Gamay and found it a lot more interesting with a few hours of air. The tooty-frooty thing settles down and it picks up some nice soil tones and comes to resemble more of what I expect from a good mountain wine.
