It was excellent tonight. Really lovely color. In dampened restaurant lighting, very ruby in color (a bottle at the house a year ago showed more browning, but the light was brighter). Mid-shoulder fill. Real sense of umami in the mouth, with a little bit of plummy fruit left and all you'd expect from mature Trotanoy.

Big shout out to SFJoe for opening my first older Trotanoy several years ago. It was either a 70 or 75. It opened my eyes to the pleasure in these wines.
 
If I had to guess, it was the '75. I wasn't there, but SFjoe is always saying I should buy the '75 Trot if I see it around at a good price. Of course, I haven't seen it around at a good price.

SFjoe was on the receiving end of a 75, 16 months ago ( bottle purchased in 1996 from a restaurant cellar ). It's kind of scary how good that wine can be.

this was outstanding a week ago.
[tongue-in-cheek] boring because this is exactly what I'd expect from a 50-60 yr old Trot hypothetically crossed with somewhat linear definitions characteristic in the vintage.
I mean "linear" in the best sense; just saying that with the best 66s I don't find myself dwelling on elaborately ornamental snapshots of the wine, with the premium on vertical continuity within a gothic frame.
its depth was immeasurable, but that's Trot: layers and layers of dark cherry and plum fruit made exciting with an occasional interplay of red and black fruits.
this was slightly more gamey (a Trot feature more prominent in the 90s and later) than other vintages in the 60s and 70s, with occasional hints of blood red orange and trace amounts of something deep red floral.
this is a traveling without moving wine.
