My first Young Egon Muller...(and my first post)

2012 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Kabinett A.P.#3

OK, so I have this notion that Egon Muller need all of this time, that they are only great with age. Boy howdy, am I wrong. This might be the most complex, and at the same time, approachable Kabinett that I have ever tested. This is the quintessential "power without weight" Kabinett as well. It has qualities/perceptions of limestone and slate, desiccated fruit skins, silica glass, pungent lime, tangerine and grapefruit, flowers, earth, and a quality like bitters, or sweet bitters, that send this to the moon. This is delicious today, and will surely last for ages. Jeez I only have two left... I must find more.

seemed like an actual kabinett as well, not just by name :-)

As with so many wines, drink them young or drink them old, just don't drink them in between.

A 2004 Scharzhofberger Spatlese was completely shut down last year but several 2011 Scharzhofberger Kabinetts were delightful.

So previously you were just slumming with the aged versions?

Great question, I didn't think of it that way. I never bought young as they are 3x more than I pay for other stellar Kabs. From time to time I picked up older bottles from small offerings.
