Gaunoux Pommard Epenots '05

François Gaunoux Pommard Les Épenots 1er Cru '05 -- Dark red, complex red fruits, earth, spice, solid imposing structure but approachable, elements in balance, appealing complexity, deep core of fruit, drinking fine but has lots of life left, another fine 2005. [E]

Worked nicely with caesar salad and fried oysters.

P.S. Also had the Bret Brothers La Soufrandière Macon-Vinzelles '10. I wish I could find some more of this. Absolutely delicious and at a nice price point!

I fear the new "which food and wine did you pair today" thread may become the longest yet

Yeah, but, dotster, think of the things one can learn. Did you know or ever think to try '03 beaucastel with oatmeal cookies? Or '05 epinots with oysters (fried or otherwise)? When aliens come to explore our ruined planet centuries (decades?) from now, they'll at least have this record of human eating habits.

I take a properly made oatmeal cookie very seriously. No messing around.

What does one do with fried oysters, anyway?

Nice note Pete. I like Epenots but do not know this house. I'm not brave enough yet to try my '05 1ers, so glad to see this was so open. I'll look out for the house ...

Cheers, Howard

Howard, I've seen the Gaunoux Epenots '09 offered various places but didn't want to deal with shipping in this case so I was glad that my local purveyor just found some of the '09...I grabbed all of it (which wasn't much, unfortunately).

Pete, and now ask your purveyor to upgrade from F Gaunoux to M Gaunoux, and you'll be all set

Aleksandr, Wish I could! I haven't seen Michel Gaunoux selections in our market place.

It's a bit difficult to keep straight the various relationships and sequences between the Gaunoux family members and their wines.

Certainly the Michel Gaunoux domaine gets very high marks.

Is there anything Wrong with the Francoise wines? What is your take on them? I've always thought they were a good compromise, in all the political sense of that word.

I've liked their Clos Des Chenes very much in the past

Mark, My "take" is fully consistent with the parent note. The Francois wines are generally excellent.

In comparison, Michel Gaunoux is often considered a step above, if not one of the top houses. I imagine this is what Aleksandr was referring to.
