Let your Burgundies (and other wines) fart!

People who drink with me know that I am pretty insistent about decanting the wines we drink, even if just before we drink them and even though they might not have thrown sediment yet (or are too shaken up for decanting to remove much sediment). A recent Winesearcher article supports my preference - apparently the wines need to fart!

"In contrast, wines that need decanting the most are the youngest. The reasons are chemical. There's a big misunderstanding about what decanting does. Wine experts talk about how it allows wine to "breathe," as if the wine will inhale life-giving oxygen and exhale beautiful fragrance.

In truth, what happens is more like, how can I put this delicately ... well, I can't. Decanting essentially allows wine to fart. And with that out of the way, it smells better."
