Index Fungorum

"The Index Fungorum, the global fungal nomenclator coordinated and supported by the Index Fungorum Partnership, contains names of fungi (including yeasts, lichens, chromistan fungal analogues, protozoan fungal analogues and fossil forms) at all ranks."

Search for morchella and there are 315 results.

A survey of my dismay.

Not that Morchella isn't confusing for the nonspecialist, but some of those names have been superseded. Some aren't even in the genus anymore. They have 1464 Lepiota, and a bunch of them have been split out over recent years.

Taxonomy will settle down, but in the meantime it is a whirlwind of confusion.

But thanks, Jeff, despite the bittersweet nature of your link.
