NWR: Netflix access abroad

anyone know the trick to accessing your netflix account outside of the usa? apparantly, netflix doesnt have license to stream movies and tv shows outside the usa but googling shows that you can access your account with a "VPN". i have no idea what a "VPN" is.

any help appreciated. thanks.

Wherever you access Netflix, you access the Netflix of the country you're in, regardless of where your account is established, and each country has different programming choices, as well as different subtitle options. If you want to access American Netflix outside the USA, you need a VPN to generate an American ip address so that Netflix thinks you're in the USA. I installed Strong VPN, and it works well: http://strongvpn.com

Bill, to answer your question, a VPN is a virtual private network. Corporations use them so that employees have secure access to interal corporate servers. Others use them for privacy by obscuring their own IP address.. What VPNs do is to route your Internet traffic through their servers to give the packets the address of their servers, not your computer.

thanks all. i'll check this info out.
my daughter is studying (at least i hope she is) in buenos aires and is a bit miffed she cant watch whatever it is she watches on netflix.

thanks again, i appreciate the responses.

anything she shouldnt miss while there? restaurants, cafes, museums, art galleries? even wineries ,as the apple didnt fall far from the tree....

I'm not so particular about my online amusements, but I do like streaming a bit of something before bed and being abroad is an annoying block to the usual American channels. I usually make do with various content accessible via YouTube (last summer it was Howard Stern interviews), but she may be more particular.
