I got together with some friends last night at Peach & the Porkchop in Roswell, GA, for what turned out to be a delightful dinner. I was a little concerned at first at the size and breadth of the menu, as I've often found that the food quality suffers when a restaurant tries to attract local families looking for a casual dinner while also offering "chef-ier" choices. However, after sharing several of the appetizers and entrees, they showed that they can pull it off well. our server was enthusiastic, attentive, and professional, and everything was good at a minimum, but items of particular note included the deviled egg, pork belly crostini, fried green tomato, pork chop, short rib, a cobia special, and a pecan pie cheesecake.
We covered a lot of ground with the wines we brought, which worked well with the assortment of food we enjoyed. All in all, a very nice evening with good friends, good food, and good wine.
2001 Domaine Marc Kreydenweiss Riesling Wiebelsberg La Dame - Sleek and focused, with honey, petrol, wet slate, and a little lemon and melon, supported by nice acidity.
2012 Gérard Boulay Sancerre La Côte - Crisp and refreshing, with tons of minerals, salinity, and white melon.
2013 Sojourn Chardonnay Sonoma Coast - Melony fruit and well-integrated vanilla oak on the nose, with pure fairly rich fruit focused by acidity on the palate, it's the kind of California Chardonnay I can appreciate.
2013 Laetitia Winery Pinot Noir Reserve du Domaine - It manages to take elements I don't usually care for and turn them into assets. Young, with cherry and a little Dr. Pepper but not at an off-putting level (and I generally don't like cola in my PN), held together with slightly gritty tannin but the grit adds a nice texture and actually enhances the drinking experience.
2005 Rhys Alesia Syrah Fairview Ranch - Still very youthful, with brambly fruit and black olives, with substantial but ripe tannin. Very nice.
2010 Mas d´en Gil Priorat Bellmunt - A little dilute, with loads of tannin, but redeemed by the purity of the fruit. It probably needs time or air to really come together.
2012 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir Louise - Rich cherry fruit, a little medicinal, not bad, just not that exciting to me.
2005 Jean-Paul Thevenet Morgon Vieilles Vignes - Ripe pure gamay accented by earth and leather, it's gorgeous and in a really good place right now. It's worth noting that I found pretty much no brett, which apparently can be an issue with this wine.
