1966 vintage?

Great port vintage.

Winebid has (in ascending order of cost) Sandeman, Warre's and Taylor Fladgate in this week's auction. I have a bid in on one of the four bottles of Warres. Never been much of a Sandeman fan.
 
Thank you, Jay. I remember a really nice bottle of Chateau Nenin a decade ago but there doesn't seem to be any around. Also, it must have been a lousy year in Italy as all those old bottles moving through Chambers Street lately seem to include every vintage but '66.

I tried bidding in an auction once a few years ago for some ancient Beaujolais and the experience was not for me. Probably for the best.

Kay, I'm often in the market for 1966 since it was the year my parents were married. I've had very good bottles of Montrose and Trotanoy. The Montrose was under $150 and the Trotanoy under $200 (but that was lucky, I think).

What's your price ceiling?
 
Oh boy, under $200 for sure. I'm being egged on by someone who loves me but in all honesty expensive wine makes me uncomfortable.

Just found a localish shop that has Brane Cantenac, Cantenac Brown and Leoville Poyferre '66 all for under $100. Making progress!
 
Some searching reminds me that Haut Bailly was really good and IIRC the bottle of Leoville Barton I brought to Madame Claude for Chris and Lisa's going away party was very good.
 
I've had both the '66 Calon-Segur and Cheval Blanc in recent years. I'd go with the Calon-Segur though both are still very appealing wines.

'66 Léoville Las Cases was brilliant each of the several times I had it. I have some acquaintances who've drunk it in the past month or so who said it's still lovely.

Excellent news! I also grabbed 2 bottles of this.

My parents are having their 50th anniversary this summer, so I'm on the hunt.

Anyone try 1966 Vieux Chateau Certan?
 
I adore the '66 Haut-Bailly - it's better than the Haut-Brion. As long as condition and color are good, I haven't really had a disappointing '66 Bordeaux. Finding bottles in great condition is of course the challenge.

Man, you must have good sourcing to find old bottles like that Upstate! Don't suppose you can find some cheap '61's?
 
By localish I meant in NY as opposed to CA, DC or Europe where much of the old wine seems to be.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! I now have a lot to go on.

VLM, quit snatching up all the fucking wine.

I recall you opening '66 Calon Segur and DDC at some points in the past, and both being fantastic.

I'll echo Keith on Haut Bailly. Beychevelle, Cantemerle, and Giscours are also winners in '66.
 
The first of a 3 bottle lot of Domaine de Chevalier opened earlier this year was excellent, and the winning bid worked out to under $70/bottle including premium, so values can be had.
 
My impression has been that '66 remains distinctly undervalued in the market because of the general disparagement of the year by the pointy folks in the US. The same holds true with some of my he '70s vintages in my experience.
