With a surprise lunch break at Rouge Tomate 2014 Domaine aux Moines, Savennieres, Roche aux Moines was remarkably open and almost fruity. Past vintages have always come across as tight, traditional Savennieres--I'm still waiting on the 1990--but this wine was just in a perfect spot. Good food, too. It paired perfectly with turnip soup. 93 pts.
At this point I'm pretty much completely out of touch with Bordeaux but was in the mood so picked up a bottle of 2014 Chateau Gloria, Saint Julian because on the shelf talker Parker said it was rustic. Shit. He was right! A little shower curtain at first, then it's a chunky, tannic and beguiling bottle of Bordeaux that harmonizes perfectly with a cumin spiced lamb dish. After a couple days it settles down into a more elegant profile but if asked I would guess Saint Estephe before Saint Julian. No new oak, gloss or spoof. Yes. 93 pts.
2015 Chateau Thivin, Cote de Brouilly, thought it was a 2014 but grabbed from the bin below the shelf and after closer examination of the bottle at home it turned out to be from the BIG vintage. Lovely wine. A little jam but also some lactic notes, bright acid and lovely earth and stones. Fine tannins keep the ample fruit in check. Absolutely made for food. 93 pts.
Best,
Kay
