New in NOLA?

Some friends and I will be descending on New Orleans next weekend. Last year, we had a great meal at Herbsainte, and would happily return but I’d like to hear people’s thoughts about other options that I may not know of.

Ditto Shaya and Compere Lapin. We had a really outstanding meal at Shaya. Just lights out good -- server, wine, food, all totally on point.

I would add:
Peche - same restaurant group as Herbsaint and Cochon, but more seafood oriented

La Petite Grocery - slower paced, quieter, more buttoned up experience. Wine list is a bit "safe" (Burgundy, Sauv Blanc, Napa) but ample options

Hi Mark,

I was there last April and May and spent 11 days in Nola. We were staying uptown and spent a fair amount of time in that neighborhood. For wine shops I would highly recommend stopping in Spirit Wines off Magazine St. it’s small but has a very disorderly selection. It’s owned by a young couple who were super friendly and helpful. Tons of gems in a mini Chambers St way.

Martin wine cellar also uptown is much bigger and you have to hunt a bit for the treasures, but I found Louis Michel Chablis there and if you need a bottle of Mugnier Clos Marechal you can splurge on that at Martins. They also have a great deli for charcuterie, cheese and other goodies that were amazing. Nice folks there too.

My favorite meal was Coquette. The $70 tasting menu was a great way to see what they were about. Beautiful small plates of locally sourced things, modern Nola cooking. It’s a splurge but I also thought it a good value. They have wine pairings and a great list. The seafood dishes were memorable but every plate we had was good. We opted for a bottle of Ulli Stein Riesling because I’m a huge fan and have never seen his wines on a restaurant list. Highly recommended.

A second vote for Turkey and Wolf for lunch. A hipster diner with amazing creative sandwiches. Crowded but the line moves fast. Agree about the wedge salad, fabulous.

Cochon butcher for lunch was also fun, all things pig, great pickles, pretty decent wines BTG.

If you want to hit a brew pub I liked Nola brewing. Some traditional styles but also some very good barrel aged sours. Good bbq there too.

We loved the grilled oysters at Casamentos. It’s kind of a local hole in the wall place and has funky hours, sometimes closed on a whim, but the oysters were yum.

May Pop towards downtown was an interesting mix on S Asian fusion with Nola style. Their dim sum on the weekend was a lot of fun.

If you feel like soul creole I loved Lil Dizzys in Treme neighborhood. It’s a family run, no frills local joint with great fried chicken, the best version of meaty white beans, file gumbo, etc. The chef has a booth at Jazzfest and his trout baquet is my favorite dish of all the food booths at the Fest.

We had brunch a couple of days at Atchafalaya, as it was walking distance from our place. Very good food, a make your own Bloody Mary bar with an amazing variety of house pickled veggies. Good shrimp grits and their brunch pho was also great. One Saturday we walked in and Luther Dickinson and Alvin Youngblood Hart were jamming the blues in the tiny bar for about 8 people, which was an amazing experience. We missed the first half of Jazzfest that day as we were glued to our seats until they finished playing. That may have only happened because it was during Jazzfest but who knows.

We went to a party that was catered by Jaques-Imo’s restaurant. Based on the quality of the food there I would bet the restaurant would be good for Cajun soul style food. We couldn’t get a reservation so we didn’t make it there.

A note above Shaya. Alon Shaya who the restaurant is named for, had a falling out with the two owners, one who is John Besh. Shaya and the head chef left the restaurant a few years ago. I heard he was going to open a new place but when we were in town last Spring it hadn’t opened yet.

Hope that helps.

Wow, everyone! Thanks for the most provocative list of suggestions. We aren't there for long, but I've got lots of good options.
