Reading drssouth's post on the Robinot below, I felt inclined to chime in on a wine that recently surprised me. I have found the Chaussard wines of Domaine de Briseau to be a mixed lot. Some charming, some wonderful, some confusing or downright odd. The bottle of 2004 Briseau Les Mortiers was absolutely wonderful. Full of life, fresh and vibrant, and with real strength of flavor without being overwhelming. I am assuming that this is pineau d'aunis because of the lovely white pepper notes that complimented the fruit, although I cannot find my old notes to make certain the cpage. This wine had been all out of whack a couple of years ago and was part of an orphaned half-case in the local distributors warehouse. I tried it on a lark and am very, very glad I did. Bravo to Christian Chaussard. You will be happy to drink this now, but I think it has some room for medium term improvement.
