2012 Heymann-Löwenstein von blauen schiefer
No idea what it was like when younger, but in a nice place right now. A verdant golden diamond that is integrated, balanced, savory and a fine riesling to drink with your dinner. On its own it is very nice, but has a tough time standing up to the following wine, which could have been predicted.

2014 Heymann-Löwenstein Uhlen R Roth Lay
More carbonated coiled power upon opening, but with a bit of air starts showing the goods. As above, it is a verdant golden diamond, but more focused, more precise, more layers, more depth, more elegance, more mineral. Lovely lovely stuff that has me looking forward to opening the 2015.

The reason why I stopped buying H-L is that one never has the slighest idea how that next vintage might taste. One year a certain wine might be focused and lively, then the next year fat and flabby. With the differences going way beyond the inherent differences of each vintage. When I was still in Germany one could just try before buying more, but from the states this is unfortunately not feasible.

I don't have much history with the domaine, but I hear the general style started getting more elegant and focused around 2012? The 2014 Roth Lay was certainly in that vein and I'm expecting/hoping for the same style - with a bit more vintage richness - from the bottles of 2015 I'm bringing home to the US.

Who knows. Will see!

I think his daughters who are absolutely lovely have been taking the reins on the winemaking over the last few years. I stopped into the winery last year during a big tasting for their private customers and accidentally broke a glass. The old man was PISSED, you would have thought I knocked over a fuder of his top wines!

Reminds me I have some 2005 to drink up...

Pradikat wines? That was a big year that has been slow to evolve, in general. Should be interesting.

Not sure, been awhile since I looked at them.
