2008 Louis Boillot, keep the faith?

Corked. Damn! Last bottle.

2008 Louis Boillot Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnet
I can see, smell, taste and sense the clear violet fruit underneath, and it is very nice. But it is surrounded by structure. At first it is a wall of tannin. With air that recedes and it provides some nice wine moments with dinner. But then the hard acid structure comes on strong and the overall message is not one of harmony or maximum joy. I have more and I guess there is no option but to wait and keep hoping for the best...

Opened a bottle of his 2008 Pommard Croix Boissée a few weeks ago to check in and it was approachable but not singing yet. Enough to reassure me.

We opened a 2008 Boillot Gevrey "Evocelles" last night that was quite good. It showed more richness and fruit, relatively speaking, than the Champonnets that Rahsaan opened. It did still have a few sharp edges to polish off if the tannins rounds out just a touch more and there is a bit more bottle sweetness I think it'll be peak drinking.

I took a hard look at the Champonnets, but decided against opening it based on Rahsaan's note. I am still optimistic that it will come around but I don't know for sure.

Good for you! I think we had the 08 Evocelles at one of your RC Boillot dinners and it showed pretty well there as well, although I don't think I ever bought any.

If I remember correctly you had a positive experience with 08 Champonnet at some point in the past year? But these things fluctuate and I would imagine that the safest times for peak drinking are still in the future.

Not in the past year, it was a while back. I don't remember exactly because I drank it off the Rue Cler list and so don't have a CT record. The combo of cool site, vintage and Domaine style might make this tough sledding for a while, sort of like Barthod wines. If you lose faith completely, let me know. Maybe we can work out a fair trade.
