I never thought Chile was big and boring, although there was a certain amount of copycat marketing among the larger companies there. Copying Napa (or Burgundy/Bordeaux for that matter) - now that would be boring.
 
At one club we have a S American Asado dinner periodically and Chilean wines are often served. And I believe they are well liked.

A wine tour to Chile is coming up in January but I'm not going. It sold out immediately.

Chile has an extraordinary natural beauty, from the Andes to the coastal towns to the deserts in the north and the wilderness to the south. I'm a fan of classic Maipo Cab, which I find has a distinct character, and my favorite Sauvignon Blancs come from the coastal Leyda, San Antonio and Casablanca valleys. While the cuisine has none of the renown of Peruvian or Argentine cooking, the quality and range of the seafood is staggering, and I had a number of good meals there. Santiago is no Buenos Aires (as the residents and winery people often ruefully remarked), but we found some interesting markets and the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art is spectacular. But most of all, I think the topography and natural beauty makes it worth visiting.

Between the incredible people, flawlessly done lamb asado, finding well cared-for local Cabernet at in-the-know wine shops, and scenery like this, I have become an addict of travel in Chile. It is as endearing and magnetic to me as Alaska, and that is no mean feat.
