Burgundy glass

I've always found it interesting that Georg Riedel, in private tastings, has extolled a Burgundy glass having a flared lip -- which is what his premier glass has. I agree with him. But his other "Burgundy" glasses do not have a flared lip???

To me the best Burgundy glass is by Mikasa, which has a big bowl and a flared lip. I've heard people mention the Conterno glass and it looks like it would work well also, but I haven't (knowingly) used it before.

I find the flared lip stylish but both the Riedel Sommelier and the Conterno glass are ridiculously large. I refuse to use a wine glass the size of a volleyball. I salute the Conterno's return to curves away from the angular trend inaugurated by Zalto (although reminiscent of the old Riedel Extreme line), but the bottom curve is too squat for my taste. I'm passing on them.

Riedel did for awhile have a Burgundy glass for his Target line with a flared lip that was similar to the Sommelier glass but a bit smaller and narrower. It's a nice glass but also too big.

More annoying to me than the lip issue is how every manufacturer seems to think their Burgundy glass has to be extremely wide, as if that is something traditional to the region or particularly beneficial for pinot noir. It isn't either. The whole thing where the Bordeaux glass is more-or-less a standard shape and the Burgundy glass fat around the waist was an invention of Mr. Riedel, so far as I can discern.

I'm using Zalto Bordeaux at the moment for Burgundies and most reds.

Keith, I agree with some of your points except the large size of the glass doesn't bother me; in fact, I rather like the large size.

Here the glass on the left is the smaller Mikasa Burgundy glass next to a Riedel glass...

I like this glass as well as the larger Mikasa Burgundy glass.

Unfortunately, since mentioning the Mikasa glasses, I've come to realize that they are apparently discontinued now.

But the photo of the Mikasa glass gives an idea of an affordable glass that I prefer with Burgundies. The flared Riedels are outside my comfortable level price-wise.
