Two really nice wines the past few days.
Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron '90 -- Good color with slightest edge browning, cigar box and cassis aromas, still full and rich and complex, tannins largely in abeyance, dark fruits. Terrific Claret that was perfect accompaniment for roast duck. [E]
Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape '08 -- Solid color, power in the bouquet, dark fruits, garrigue, plenty of acid backbone, multi-layered, spice, very full, no hurry with this trophy. Really a fine Mother's Day Beaucastel with rib eye steaks, scalloped potatoes, and crispy Brussels sprouts. [E]
As wonderful as the Pichon Baron '90 was, it was marginally surpassed in my view by the Beaucastel '08. Even from the supposed less than stellar 2008 vintage, the Beaucastel was awesome.
. . . . Pete
