    Rest well, Joe Dressner

This is tragic. All my thoughts are with his family.

    Wild mushrooms in Brussels

Happy to stage a Brussels jeebus. I have never been to the Café des Spores. It plays on the natural understatement of the Belgians, which have been ruled by others for most of its history and prides themselves for not making a fuzz about the good things. Yes Brussels (and generally Belgium) is...

Maipo, Savigny, Pavia, Belgium, Bourgueil, Franciacorta, Alsace

Oops, Westvleteren 8 should not taste animal - there is something wrong here. It should small of allspice, yeasts, cane / brown sugar and weath. It is really complex, like a Houillon made beer, on the palate. Very drinkable. As delicious as is, Orval should come over as one-dimensional against...

Anyone going to the Age of Riesling tasting?

If Weiser-Knstler brings some 07, then I would encourage anyone to have a go at them. In particular the Ellergrub Kabinett, which is one of my favourites in this vintage. If they continue on this trajectory, it won't be long before they also will be "one of the big ones".

    My dinner with Louis-Michel Liger-Belair

Hi David, The auction Schaefer from 1998 has just that edge in terms of creaminess - it is quite a powerful wine. Of course powerful stands here for: "powerful for the 90s" and not "05-06-07 powerful" J

    Visit at Castell

i also enjoyed the 85 schlossberg - but it is level 4 stuff. The eulengrube (part of Lump now i think) cabinet must have been a lovely wine. I am looking forward to a 66er castell hohnart perl, which is patiently waiting in my cellar. the 67 is incredible isn't it: it was a tip off from egon...

What do people drink with sushi?

Indeed now I see it! And focus as well on Saar and Ruwer! Do I understand well from your message that you never had it? Then try it, really. If you can get a Kabinett from von Hvel or von Schubert or even from Zilliken. Works very well and even better once the sugar has integrated after a...

What odlies were you able to snatch up during your trip in Franken? Looking forward to your note on the 67!

    Visit at Castell

I am drinking the Hohnart Kabinett 2007 currently (last few days) and yes, it is the only wine I bought in 2007 from the Estate. To me Hohnart remains their best vineyard or, to put it more correctly, the vineyard that matches best the Estate's style. Schlossberg is maybe of the same level of...

What do people drink with sushi?

Funny that noone seemed to have mentioned moderately aged Saar or Ruwer Riesling. These wines are made for Sushi.

    Hans Wirsching; 2007-vintage

au-S-lese it was introduced in the prehistory (pre-grosses Gewchs) to replace the auslese trocken (auslese trocken doesn't sell well as a brand) as usual, egil picked the top trio: the two jeb sl trocken -s- and the kronsberg riesling sl trocken. brilliant in their own right. i was...

report of Clos St. Hune premox

Huh? JJ Prm's 93 went through malo???? not the ones I have ... (a poor man who doesn't understand a single word of the fuzz here - my CSH and CFE are all nice and well behaved. Maybe it is a question of education. Our wines can only talk at the table if they are asked to give their opinion -...

CWD: '95 Sierra Cantabria Rioja Reserva

I am sure the Eguren follow the Eguren style: - reserva + gran reserva = aging in american oak barrels + long(er) aging in oak (3years). - other = french barrique + malo barrique + shorter aging in oak (12-24months). stylistically, that makes a big difference in terms of type of wine you have...

CWD: '95 Sierra Cantabria Rioja Reserva

I tasted by chance yesterday the 2004 reserva bottling and it is as good as the 1995. A friend of mine imports the Eguren stuff into my low land and if I understand him right, anything bottled as Reserva or Gran Reserva is made in a traditional style (I would say Giacosa-like traditional not...
