    Great Asimov Article

The 1996 Vigneto Sgarzon was, and remains, the best Foradori I've ever tasted. (Unless I'm mistaken, Elisabetta's ex-husband still had a hand in that one). Granato, while often very good, for some reason never seems to really move me, an impression yet again confirmed by a bottle of the 2000 I...

TN: Larmandier-Bernier Terre de Vertus (2006)

Montgueux is actually nearly 100 km further south.

    Calling Bowman

Ledru is fantastic, and that applies across the range. Personal favourites: 1999 Brut Nature and 2004 Goulte' (the latter one of the best BdN I've had and, to my palate, better than Egly's). Gosset-Brabant are very good, but I don't particularly seek out their wines, probably because I already...

    trovo-lacto

Just had this the other day. Brilliant wine, quite solidly structured. All the more so as temperatures in Aubry's vineyards got up to 45 degrees Celsius that year. Other vintages seem to be ageing quite well (had a splendid - and still very youthful - '99 recently).

    2004 Marcarini Barolo Brunate 14.0%

You make it sound like a tripod.

What do people drink with sushi?

I am very partial to sparkling wine with sushi. Depending on the type of sushi and my mood, it will either be something pure and "linear" from Cramant or Le Mesnil (such as Lilbert's Perle, a Diebolt-Vallois vintage, or Pierre Peters' Extra Brut) or something a little more technicolour (Jean...

2005 Domaine de Roally Vir Cless 13.5%

Interesting. I have never really found Roally lacking in the acid department (and that sample includes a number of '05 bottles). They are a little on the rich side, but I feel there's a great balance in there that a bit of age might help to coax out into the open.

    Blaufrankisch: Opinions?

Try an Umathum Ried Hallebuehl, or even their basic Zweigelt bottling, with a little age on it. Very little overt fruit, considerable structure and complexity.

    04 Baudry Grzeaux

It's a fantastic wine. Probably my favourite from the Baudry stable. The 2004 is just great.

TN: And now for something completely different

Wow, esoteric stuff. Zlatan Plavac is made by Hvar-based Zlatan Plenkovic. It's his entry-level bottling. Over the last ten or so vintages, this wine has ranged from abysmal (entirely out of balance, soaring alcohol levels unsupported by structure) to moderately interesting at best. His top...

    Aglianico. Help me! (Fontanavecchia)

Have you had D'Angelo's Vigna Caselle, Cliff? Not sure what it sells for over in the US, but here it's eminently affordable and my gold standard for traditional Aglianico del Vulture.

    Down to a t. Brilliant.

    Le Viaggia Voyat

Reminds me I still have a bottle of the '93 Muraglie buried somewhere, along with an '83 Chambave. I wonder how the Muraglie bottling is holding up.

A16 was great and so was the COS

Brad, Frank Cornelissen is another grower in the general neigbourhood (Etna) who uses terracotta amphorae, as far as I remember.

    transparency in translation

Let us assume for a moment that this is really true in practical terms, and not just a scientific hypothesis. All languages can express what all other languages say. But the real question here is : how? Sometimes a gap "created" in the target language by a single phrase in the original language...
