CWD: Tell us one good thing you drank this week

I remember thinking both them and von Schubert in the Ruwer had really great wines. I bought quite a bit of the trocken that vintage, but was wary of the Auslesen (only have 3 bottles left). My revealed preferences (i.e. what I bought): Nik Weis (primarily his Saar bottlings, esp. the...

New SF venture for Massimiliano and Lorena

As someone who stays just north of Ingleside when in town this is welcome news.

2003 Eitelsbacher Kärthauserhof Riesling Auslese (AP: 15-04) Should have bought more. The 2003s from the estate are superb.

NWR: Slanted Door Reopening in Spring 2025

I know - I was responding to fb; there was no need to bring wine to Slanted Door at Valencia.

NWR: Slanted Door Reopening in Spring 2025

Yes, I recall that (I was probably the idiot who wanted to, and did bring wine). Acquerello, Slanted Door, Chapeau...

    Chenin-Gamay-Silvaner

Very young is best (I loved the first vintage of Impenitents on release), but I reckon 15 years or so is pretty good as well. Otherwise they're really, really hard. The kids (okay, they're not kids now, but let an old man be) have a softer touch.

    CWD: Disorderly Adjacent 2016 Bordeaux

Lafon-Rochet is solid, worth drinking. Hard and instant no on DDC. I would also pass, at current prices, on the other left bank estates in your list, but maybe you like setting money on fire. I don't follow right bank estates as closely (i.e. I don't taste through them systematically), sticking...

    Home Chemistry

2017 Quinta do Crasto is a great port and hence a superb corrective. Even works for Champagne - rinse the glass with it and pour in an extra-brut. Voila, a nice Rose Brut NV. A few drops go a long way!

CWD: What did you drink last night (or whenever)?

The 'bottling' requirements for BIB are quite different IME; you've got to prepare the wine differently (SO2 is only part of it; sterile filtration, dissolved CO2, and so on). Cans are actually easier to switch to but require a huge run to be cost-effective. Both, in my considered opinion, are...

    New California Wine (TM) query

Was in the area in Feb. La Ciccia wasn't as good as I remember - I went with regulars and they concur. Steve Edmunds was the one who brought me to Belotti. One of my favourites, and I don't even like pasta that much. Drove up with a friend from Palo Alto just for lunch. Cotogna was very good...

    RIP Daniel Vollenweider

Some of you may know that Daniel and I were close. I worked several seasons for him after we'd met at Dr. Loosen. I've reposted what I wrote on my website here (no link as it feels rather gauche to direct any traffic from here): "I'm still in shock, half a world away. Daniel passed away last...
