    London Questions

currently very good eats and drinks at ellory, p franco (very odd hours), sager + wilde restaurant. sportsman also gets a thumbs up. the marksman has excellent food; brilliant corners is good for a bottle if you're in the area, but eat elsewhere.

    Madrid, quite late tonight

Last minute into Madrid tonight, and leaving again tomorrow evening. Anyone have suggestions for a late dinner (probably around 11.45pm) near the Argüelles metro stop? And also for dinner tomorrow considering my flight is at 7.30pm. Simple, well-cooked food is what I'm hoping for; no time for...

    London Questions

the ottolenghis are, indeed, not worth a special trip: good flavours usually competently executed, but overpriced for the ingredient quality. dinner is nice if someone else is paying—in which case the ledbury and hedone are also worth consideration. food (* = unspoofy wines available): - 40...

    Patrick Rols!

the rols la coccinelle is also delicious—very oxidative chenin blanc. but a word to the wise: both bottles i had of the 2013 were dark and gloomy when first opened and took several days in the fridge to open up.

    vegas tomorrow through 1/16

as far as i'm aware, valley cheese and wine is the only serious game in town. i'm pretty sure they carry ESJ (plus bob is a really nice guy who might be able to hook you up if you let him know what you want in advance).

The customer is not always right

the sommelier at l'astrance made a big production (integrated into service) about opening all his pairing wines well in advance of when he plans to pour them—sometimes 2-4 days before service. presumably this brings wastage for pairing wines down to nearly zero.

    san diego

turns out, neither tijuana nor bob irwin will happen this visit. (oswaldo is right: he's an artist who's had a rather unusual evolution in practice over the course of several decades. the subject of a fascinating book by lawrence weschler: seeing is forgetting the name of the thing one sees)...

landing tomorrow morning, staying close to torrey pines until fri morning (interviewing bob irwin!—maybe). any recommendations for good cavistes, good food, good wine lists? will probably go across the border one day, so recommendations for tijuana also solicited. i am particularly excited...
