Very, very good - easily better than most "Western" 2-stars food-wise (and not just because I'm yellow-skinned and have an East Asian palate), but I'm guessing the service, which is a bit less formal, will preclude them ever getting the 3rd star. Which is fine by me, to be honest.
Expensive wine list, though.
Girlfriend and I might hit Japan for a couple of weeks next year in spring; will let you know if we do.

do get in touch if you are returning. we'll be here except for a 2 week period somewhere around spring. i was reading a chowhound review of ryugin...looks like pretty dainty portions, but some interesting ideas....if a little gimmicky at times (a miniature freeze dried apple?). that review spoke of white gloved servants...so wonder what happened to the service? by the way, if you like classic sushi of the highest order, i can steer you to a shop outside tokyo (i forget what sort of train ride it is now). suehiro's in shimizu...not far from the station. you can't eat anyone else's sushi for months afterwards.
It was white-gloved, but the service was a notch below, say, Bras or l'Arpege. Heck, even RPG in Dublin had more classically French service. I would say the staff at Ryugin were warmer and more personable, but not as sharp as a French 3-star.
The real standouts were a perfect snow crab leg, some mindblowing mashed soybeans with truffles (accompanying a highly accomplished hay-smoked duck breast), a bowl of dashi which approached the Platonic ideal, salt ice-cream, and very, very good ankimo.
