Jai Yun, January 25th

I'm bringing a 2005 Stadlmann Zierfandler Mandel- Hoh instead of the Belle Pente. Two off-dry rieslings are probably not a good idea if the other people attending include someone who worships at the altar of Trimbach and someone who likes enough acid to burn the outer layer of skin off your lips.

Off-dry and acid aren't mutually exclusive. I was envisioning this as a German riesling-fest, actually. Of course, now that I've said it, I'm sure I've jinxed it. Anyway, I will certainly be doing my part.

Also, note that we are currently at 5 humans and one monkey. Since the terms of our reservation are six humans and unlimited monkeys, there's still plenty of room.

If we can't round up a sixth person from this board, I have a couple of ideas of people we might be able to get from the eBob board.

It starts at something like $55 each and runs up to something like $90 each.
By the way, the restaurant's Web site says it doesn't open until 6:30 p.m.
Arjun:
I have a friend who speaks Cantonese. Would you like me have him call the restaurant and firm everything up?

Do we need to choose now? They didn't ask me when I made the reservation so I figured we'd just decide when we got there.

Anyway, I don't want to decide for everyone. Whatever people want to do is fine by me.

I vote $65-75. I was there less than a year ago and corkage was $8. You should bring your own stems. Reason I don't know current menu price for "civilians" is the last meal was a banquet arranged by the American Inst. of Wine & Food.

I vote for whatever Larry says.

Also, in the spirit of thread drift and not using Google, with the hell is a 2005 Stadlmann Zierfandler Mandel- Hoh?

Zierfandler is a grape that grows in one spot in Austria. The side that faces the sun ripens, giving traditional wine flavors and the side that doesn't face the sun stays green to give it acidity. So you get this sweet-and-sour thing going on.
The consensus is that Stadlmann is the best producer of zierfandler. Mandel Hoh used to be single vineyard, but now he just puts all his best zierfandler into the Mandel Hoh cuvee.
I first had it at the Slanted Door and it's an awesome wine. It's imported by Bill Mayer of Age of Riesling fame.
I brought a bottle of the basic Stadlmann Zierfandler to an offline at Yummy Yummy that Larry attended and it didn't taste good. I think part of the problem was drinking it after trying sweet rieslings. But this is the better cuvee and it's a wine I think most people will like.

He said he couldn't call when he first read my email because they were busy cooking but he would call later. I haven't heard back. I'll email him again.
