NY Madiran-cassoulet jeebus, January 19

Thanks for the invite, but I (a) may not be in town, (b) not only don't own any Madiran but was unaware of its existence until your e-mail and (c) have had a falling out with Jay Miller and refuse to eat with him. Well, that's not exactly true...I'll be in town.

What's with you and obscure SW French wines?

Ben, you had a falling out with that other Jay Miller, the Usurper of the Name. This Jay Miller is still one of the good guys. And this Jay Miller still doesn't like most Spanish wines.

The part that was true was (a) and (b), while (c) was a joke. I should know soon what our plans are, although my girls are off that week from school, so I assume we'll get out of the City.

Ok.

I made a reservation today for the 19th, though as noted that date could easily be changed if needed. The restaurant is cash only.

Add me to the list, please.

I own a single bottle of Madiran (Ch. Montus 1995 Cuvee Prestige) so that's what I'll bring.

Monday 1/19 is OK, as far as I can tell from this far away....

I can see already that it will be tough accommodating everyone.

I've found that sometimes it's tough accommodating anyone.

Pondering a similar dinner on the west coast mid-January too. A friend cooks a mean cassoulet but his wife is a vegetarian so he has to go elsewhere to practice his art. The last time we had about 18 people to the house and went through a couple of cases of various SW wines. It was a fun evening. Lipitor was served in lieu of cookies along with the coffee at the end of the night.

It's amazing who comes out of the woodwork when you whisper the magic words "Tannat", "Gros Manseng" and "home-cooked by real French people".

-Eden (other stuff can come out of the woodwork too, but an alert cat or thorough bug guy can deal with that situation)

Yeah, we hosted a largish cassoulet dinner party for non-winos who happily glugged Madirans and Irouleguys (and possibly a Bearn, can't remember) well into the wee hours of the evening. We were far less sympathetic towards our guests' future prospects, however, as we offered an obscenely rich lemon-almond cake layered with creme fraiche in lieu of Lipitor. Punishing, but so worth it.

I may be able to make it down from Boston in time for this - I need to be in NYC for work on the 21st and would be coming down on the 20th anyway, but this is serious incentive to come down a day early.

When would you need to know?

Hm, I don't know, let's say early January? I have a reservation for 10 people at 7:00pm now, probably not too much of a problem to change it as long as there is ample time.

I hope you can make it.

I'm trying to make plans to be in NYC for this weekend, is that how I got upgraded from waiting(-)list to maybe?

Does Chambers have a good supply of Madiran? Could I bring Cahors instead?

I moved you to maybe because it sounded like you were, uh, maybe coming. Hope you do.

Cahors would be lovely. If you do, I'll match it with one.

OK, I'll definitely be there, along with my better half, who a bunch of the NYC patients have met. We'll scour Boston for Madiran to bring down.
