Southern Jeeb - IS IT TIME TO TRY AGAIN?

I'm crushed that I couldn't make it, but glad to see that it went well. The last 1996 Grezeaux I opened was unbelievable. The only Loire cab I've had in recent years in its class was the 1997 Clos Rougeard Le Clos, but in a very different way. I still have a couple of the Baudrys, so I'll try to mark one for either a future trip to Durham or here if you ever get to Atlanta.

Bringing Baudry to VLM is a bit like coals to St. James' Park, no?

Ha! If anyone has as much or more Baudry than I do, I'm sure it's Mike.

I'd be honored if you saved a 1996 Grézeaux to drink with me. I've got a couple 1996 Croix-Boissée left.

Maybe we should organize something around a Baudry vertical/horizontal. I'll try to see if I can get Matthieu to come. Long shot, but one never knows. I think we should make the Southern Jeeb a regular thing. This is the perfect time of year for NC.

It's been a LONG time since I've been to Atlanta. When I go further south I've been going to Charleston. Is that a mistake?
 
Does anyone have any ideas about what a latter day 1996 Grézeaux might be? There isn't a vintage that fits that perfectly. The 2002 is already more mature than the 1996.
 
The 2000 Grézeaux is in a fantastic place right now. They have it on the list at Racines. How would you characterize that vintage?

A shame about the 2011 Vatan. Sounds like it should have been among different wines.

Coincidentally, I had the 2000 Grézeaux the last time I was at Racines. While it is a nice wine, the 1996 is in another league, IME. 2002 seemed to be the most likely candidate, but it lacks the intensity of 1996. Other top vintages are larger in scale.

While my write up may have given the impression that there was some sort of order to the wines, it was very loose. For the most part they were all open on the table and one could go back and forth at leisure. I do think that in other company or alone the 2011 Vatan would have been more remarkable. Ditto the 1999 Clape.

Yeah, 1996 was kind of a hard thing to parallel. What about 2004 one day? Or even 2005? (Or is that crazy talk?)

Actually, it wasn't on the list at the time (this was a couple of years ago, I think) and Arnaud suggested it.

They both are much bigger wines. The 2005 has the depth, but the scale is very different.
