Popelouchum

Randall Grahm has spent the pandemic year selling through a great deal of Bonny Doon back-vintage stock. Like clockwork, the deals arrived every Tuesday.

Today, I received an announcement:

POPELOUCHUM

Subject: The Boy Who Cried "Terroir"

As you no doubt have heard, I have in recent years been up to something, not wishing to rest on my loureiros, nor, heaven forfend, wishing to "settle doon" (or settle for anything other than something wondrous, unlikely and revolutionary. I purchased the Popelouchum estate in 2011 with the quixotic goal of producing "wines of place," wines that evinced true distinction and originality. The results are encouraging beyond my wildest expectations.

In the vineyard we have approximately ten acres under cultivation, half beginning to bear, half not yet. In the nursery we are currently growing from seed self-crosses of Sérine and Rossese (aka Tibouren), and are gearing up for our major breeding project involving the romantic couple of Ciliegiolo and Picolit. Thus far we have grown some amazing produce, crafted some exceptional olive oil and vinified but small, virtually homeopathic volumes of Pinot Noir, Grenache Noir, Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc and Ruchè, all (including the Pinot Noir!) exceptionally promising; Popelouchum’s unique terroir is already beginning to emerge. .

Next year we will begin to sell wines produced from this property and in anticipation of that I want to invite you to partake in our exciting journey, ensuring you may have the opportunity to learn about and purchase these bottles as they become available.

Doing things by the books means that if you want to hear the news from Popelouchum, you must opt in to continue to receive these communiqués. I remain involved in the Bonny Doon wines, and I hope you will continue to support and drink these eminently quaffable wines as well.

We hope to begin inviting guests to visit Popelouchum in the next year (maybe even this summer, pandemic allowing). I look forward to sharing the unique treasure that is Popelouchum with you.

Here is a longer piece, by Grahm, on exactly what he thinks he is going to achieve. He provides a lot of information and expresses his ideas about wines of terroir.

Thanks; I bought some of his wines when he had a huge sell off a few years ago (some sort of cash flow issue). They were better than I remembered. I like the idea of ruche!
