Alzinger Grüner Veltliner

2017 Alzinger Ried Mühlpoint GV Smaragd
A wonderful balance of golden Smaragd power and subtle gentle delicate flavors and textures. I drank two bottles recently and both kept gaining layers and depth over several hours, all the while retaining the juicy joy. A winner.

2015 Alzinger Loibner Mühlpoint GV Smaragd
More mature and harmonious than the 2017s, but with less energy and overall not quite as joyous. Certainly a lovely and elegant wine to have in your glass with dinner, so no complaints. Drank two bottles recently and was happy but not inspired to get more.

2015 Alzinger Steinertal GV Smaragd
Here we have a wine! Similar flavor profile as the above, but with such a gorgeous texture. Such clarity, such definition, such grip. I think they call that 'breed'. Enjoy!

Yum. Have you tried the 2013 Alzinger Steinertal GV Smaragd? Got half a dozen almost two years ago and the only one I've opened was a bit forbidding (as in too young).

Funny, I always think Riesling when I think Alzinger but the Grüner Veltliner made there are also excellent.

The first sounds like my recent disappointing experience with Knoll Kellerberg 2015 but the latter is more hopeful that it could be a wine-to-wine thing.

Yes, Alzinger riesling is something special, but I take what I see available.

I'm no expert, but based on commentary from others who drink these wines more often, Steinertal may be the Alzinger GV to age. The Mühlpoint GV may not age as gracefully, irrespective of vintage.

I don’t have a lot of data points, but so far the 1998 Loibner Weingarten and 2000 Mühlpoint have been aging extremely well, as has the 1998 Riesling Loibenberg. I’ve been generally thrilled with the development of a lot of 1998 Austrians, a vintage I’ve greatly enjoyed since release, but I don’t mind a fair bit of botrytis.

In 2018, I was on a river cruise, Danube-Main-Rhine. Since it was a year of severe drought, about half of it was by bus. One of the bus stops was Melk. While the rest of the passengers went on what was quite probably a delightful tour of the historic abbey, I opted to stroll downslope to the town to investigate a wine shop. Well, I was in the Wachau (almost), for chrissakes.

Anyway, the shop was delightful. I was shown the cellar room downstairs and pointed toward the typewriter-written catalog of inventory. Left to myself, I discovered a trove of Smaragd wines from the turn of the century. Most were priced lower than the current releases that were also available.

I loaded up on things to drink when I actually would get on a boat and cruise some rivers. One of the most memorable wines was the 2002 Alzinger Loibenberg GV
Smaragd. I bemoaned my tendency in that earlier period to buy only Rieslings. The 2008 Knoll Kreutles GV was also extraordinary, btw. Prager's 2000 Achleiten was delicious, but had an annoying mid-palate bitterness that I thought might mellow with a few more years. I thought the 2001 Jamek (maybe Kreutles, too) was a bit oxidized. It cleaned up nicely when paired with the tomato tart, but wasn't in the same class as the Alzinger or Knoll.

There are many ways to define sights worth seeing and it sounds like you found a very worthy place!
