I'm a bit surprised this hasn't been brought up on this bored. There's a great thread on Berserkers. A lot of personal memories from folks who knew him. There are plenty of news links.

I only met Jim a few times. To say he was larger than life barely skims the surface. If he didn't make an impression the first time you were in the same room with him, you weren't there.

Our very own Steve Edmunds mentioned how he and Bob Lindquist were mentors.
 
I was glad to see David Russell's comments about Jim, primarily concerning Jim's intellect. He had a stunningly quick and agile mind. And a great heart.
