2012 ESJ Fenaughty Syrah

Obviously there is plenty more life in this wine, but tonight it was a delicious balanced ESJ syrah, with the lovely combo of ripe savory notes and freshness.

It was a perfect match with pizza topped with roasted yellow oyster mushrooms, pecorino toscano, basil and the first fresh tomato sauce of the season. It also gains strength, richness and depth with air, all while retaining the freshness.

Happy to have more and happy to drink this now.

glad to see it was enjoyed! I took a bottle to a gathering at a place in Oakland I enjoy, and at first I found it a little too Fenaughty. But with an octopus dish with a distinctly Spanish influence it was fantastic!

Am curious what it means to be too Fenaughty? I certainly don't have the same depth of experience with the vineyard as you!

I've done a couple of Syrahs that were blends of two vineyards: Wylie-Fenaughty (several vintages) and North Canyon Road (2013 and 2015, from Fenaughty and Barsotti) which I felt were more pleasing expressions of Syrah. In each case, the non-Fenaughty portion provided features that seemed to make the wine more complete, better balance of yin and yang, perhaps. Fenaughty generally has seemed to carry the prettier components of the whole; by itself the hole feels discernible to me.

Thanks for that. I suppose I can see that. FWIW, this bottle last night didn't have the greatest depth at first, although it was still plenty delicious. So maybe that's consistent with what you mean. Although it did deepen with air and overall I can't complain!
