Terroir (the wine bar)

Terroir (the wine bar) San Franciso, Terroir (the wine bar) New York, or Terroir (the wine bar) Lake Winnibigoshish?
Terroir in SF, first time I have been there. Proceeded later to an offline at Nopa, which was hot and not really up for a wine dinner. But it was interesting perhaps to see the crowd still waiting to get tables at 9 PM when we left...

Nopa is supposed to be pretty good. They were closed because of a fire last time I was out, but I met the guys at Terroir (SF).

Terroir (SF) is VLM approved. Terroir (NY), much less so.

Yes, and they were even talking about VLM at Terroir--may have been in regard to some 2002 Huet Vouvray Petillante that you may or may not have purchased from them (I got 4 bottles myself)?

I would go back to Nopa myself with a smaller group, just not a bigger wine dinner. But then I have sworn off the big wine dinners anyway...

Carl, thanks. In some ways, I'm glad it's not in Boston. They'd have to shovel me out the door each night at closing time.

Northern MN? What the hell?

Wishful thinking.

I figured as much. Spend much time up there? I spent a lot of time in northern MN during summers growing up as my grandparents lived there. Now, not so much. I'm a Minnesotan expat.

cheers,

Kevin

Spend much time up there?

I grew up in Walker, halfway between Bemidji and Brainerd, halfway between Fargo and Duluth, halfway between hell and freezing over.

The only good wine I have seen in northern Minnesota is what I have carried there myself. A case goes in my luggage every summer...

As I've usually done when visiting the fam. Last year, I experimented with restricting myself to what was available in local stores.

I won't be trying that again.

My Dad grew up in Cass Lake, my grandparents lived in Bemidji when I was growing up. My Dad just spent a week on Bear Island in Leech Lake last week at his brother's cabin. I've never seen anything interesting to drink anywhere near there. Is the Brewpub in Bemidji even open these days?

cheers,

Kevin

See, I didn't even know Bemidji had a brewpub. At least one of the Walker stores does have a good selection of Midwestern microbrews, which is fun.

There's a restaurant near Walker called Boulders that actually has some interesting wines on their list (e.g. Felton Road Pinot Noir). So better beverages are available, in theory. I suppose I could place an order in advance; a former classmate owns one of the three liquor stores in town, and I'm sure if I spelled things out he could acquire the wines for me.

Cass Lake, huh? I actually lived north of Walker on the way to Cass Lake.

Other than your vendetta against all things from Levi-ville, what do you have against it?

I'm not nearly as impressed with their list or atmosphere as others seem to be.

Levi and I are old buddies now. We even exchanged holiday greetings and prayers.

Interesting, my cabin (frequented now for 50 years) is in Cass Lake (Star Island), 20 miles north of Walker. That is some tough country in the winter though..

We usually shop in Bemidji and I have yet to find anything beyond mass marketed, very oaky stuff.
