That is a nice report. I never warmed to Couly-Dutheil, but maybe I didn't drink comprehensively/old enough!

Yeah, thanks for sharing. I similarly am underwhelmed by Couly Dutheil. It would not at all surprise me though that its quality has changed over the years.

I actually have an 02 Clos l'Echo on deck and will report out.

A recent very nice Loire CF was a Chanteleuserie Beauvais. Low expectations, but it was pretty superb, with lots of leafy/dirty complexity.

I drank two bottles of the '05 in the past year. The second was far superior to the first, but only because the first was sacrificed to a reasonable rather than fanatical methodology of sediment isolation. Didn't expect that from an '05. Really nice wine.

a while back k&l sold a bunch of mags of late-release 80s vintages of couly dutheil, and the few i tried -- 82, 85 and 89 clos l'echo, iirc -- were somewhere between ok and meh at best. in pretty stark contrast, an original release of the 85 with the old dom rene couley label in july of last year was as good a chinon as i've swilled in a long time.

i've noticed a few other discrepancies like this over the years, and it makes me suspect that when it comes to these hooches, it is not just the age of the wine that matters, but also when they got around to bottling it.

While *looking* at the vineyard you can't help but think Clos l'Echo should make great wine.
