Evaporation wine: Ludes Thörnicher Ritsch

One of my favorite wine merchants has been boosting Ludes for a while and I'm just now getting around to drinking. I started with 2020 Hermann Ludes Thörnicher Ritsch Riesling Spätlese and my first thought is what took me so long. This bottle evaporated.

Pale fresh herbal lemon lime flavors but with nice juicy (old-fashioned) spätlese generosity in the midpalate. Enough weight to have definite palate presence, but still crisp, crunchy, racy and fine, with a whiff of savory smoke to balance everything. Perfect with a roasted chestnut omelette, potatoes, and sauteed kale and cauliflower.

The bottle evaporated in the blink of an eye, so I'm happy to have more.

I had an amazing tasting this August with young Julian who is taking over the winemaking from his uncle Hermann. I love the wines! He told me he was working 16 hours per day seven days per week in the vineyard. He is going to be a star!

I think Lyle has cleaned them out of the library wines and luckily I went very deep. They did have a major TCA problem in the 90s and 1 out of every 3 is corked.

Good to hear. I saw that Lyle was offering so many older wines. I hope there's a place in the market for these excellent and non-flashy wines to shine. Given what happened with Falkenstein, one can be hopeful for Ludes' sake. Although for the consumer, such success has downsides!

(In fact, this particular wine merchant first recommended Ludes to me because he didn't have as much Falkenstein as he used to be able to sell me. The cycle may continue...)

First thing I thought of when I tasted with Julian was Falkenstein.

Vom Boden is also going to be working with them along with Lyle so the younger wines will be more readily available in the U.S.

That’s good news. Especially (selfishly) for the NY market.

Just had another bottle and this is so freaking good. Such great flavors, texture, balance and energy. Just ordered more, along with some of 3 other 2020 cuvees.

I love the wines! In case anyone is interested source | material (I am a partner) offered the 94, 10 and 20 Spatlese for $130. I say this not to promote but because the wines are incredible. The 2010 is according to Julian one of the best wines they have made and I have had the 94 several times and it is stunning!

If anyone here would rather I not mention things related to source | material just say the word as it is just a passion project.

Looking forward to my Source Material 3-packs coming, which include this wine.

Thank you! Our posts crossed.

Last year, I bought the 2010 Auslese from Lyle through a friend, so I think I’d like to open side by side once I get the Spatlese.

I picked up a 2020 "Monster" Kab at a shop recently. Due to be opened soon.

That's one of the wines I purchased as well. I had always passed because "Monster" sounded a bit too international silly. But I should have known better. Apparently it's the name for the top sub-parcel of TR.

IIRC, the name refers to the fact that the parcel is very large (by their standards).
