And... it's Thanksgiving time again

Surely, I am the black sheep of our family.
I will bring wine (likely my own) but few others will drink it. My daughter might have half a glass and not finish it - she wouldn’t want to dis my contribution.
Wine just never seems to have found roots in my family.

But the family motto is: “there’s no fun like food fun!”
So we should be just fine.

Enjoy y’all, Jim

I have no control over the wine served at the Thanksgiving dinner, so I look forward to some spoofy CalCab, a buttery Chardonnay, a Kiwi SB and Taittinger Brut La Francaise (my one permitted contribution). It’ll be bubbles for me today, paired with a turkey prepared by a pescatarian.

Baching it so no normal Thanksgiving fare for me.

Le Vieux Donjon Chateauneuf du Pape '13 with grilled strip steak, sweet potato fries, and baked squash...then maybe some cookies.

. . . . . . . Pete

We are having a savory strudel made with homemade phyllo dough and filled with lentils, mushrooms, chestnuts and kale. In our glasses a 2004 Francois Bertheau Chamboll-Musigny and a 2012 Arnot Roberts Peter Martin Ray Vineyard Pinot Noir.

I am chilling a 2010 Domaine Julien Guillot Clos des Vignes du Maynes Macon Cruzille Aragonite that CSW sent me before the shipping game went to shit. Due to illness, we will only have our daughter Sarah, and this should be right up her alley.

Classic Midwestern menu because divergence from tradition is not permitted here, although the green bean casserole has at long last been banished in favor of some terrific brussels sprouts with a cheesy cream sauce and Neuske's bacon. Praise his Noodley Appendage.

I haven't picked a red yet, but it will almost certainly be a Pinot of some description. Leaning toward a Philippe Jouan Chambolle Musigny.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. I am grateful for all of your wisdom and wit.

One son-in-law is smoking a turkey so I'm bringing two older Ridge Zins: 2006 Ponzo and 2009 Carmichael Ranch. Also, 2015 Harrington SubRosa (50/50 Syrah/Grenache from Sumu Kaw Vnyd in Eldorado Co) and a Rosé tbd. Other son-in-law makes killer Old Fashioneds. We'll be well lubricated.

Happy Thanksgiving!

These both failed to suck. The Jouan was almost an extension of the food. Spice, throat and cranberries: meet spice, throat and cranberries. The acidity, wet slate and butteriness of the M“con Cruzille paired with Sarah's olive cheese balls seamlessly.

Dúszi, Stein, Wallace (Dirty & Rowdy era). Worked well as a progression from the cocktail(-frank) hour to the traditional dinner table.

Nice choices, Ken. Every Jouan wine I’ve had has been a joy: red fruited, delicate yet not lacking in depth. Very reminiscent of the rare Truchot wines that I’ve had.

Started with a 2015 Prum Zeltinger Sonnenuhr spatlese then moved on to 2010 Dublere MSD Blanchard. The Prum was especially excellent. An old-fashioned mosel spatlesen where the riper grapes just made the wine deeper than the kabinett that followed it (2015 Schloss Lieser Wehlener Sonnenuhr) seem sweeter. Perfect balance on the Prum.

Generelly I find simple is best with roast turkey, so it was:

2020 Zilliken Saarburg riesling feinherb

and

2022 JP Brun L'Ancien Beaujolais nouveau.

07 Levet CR Peroline (Rule-compliant TM)

2007 Peroline/Chavroche has been drinking beautifully for a while now but we acknowledge your compliance with the Rule (if not your unregistered TM).

We had ...

Alzinger Ried Muhlpoint Grüner-V, Federspiel 2020
Bessin-Tremblay Chablis 2020
Berthaut-Gerbet Fixin Crais 2020
Bruno Clair Chambolle-Musigny Veroilles 2005

The Alzinger was the stand-out wine at dinner.

The Veroilles was in honor of Pavel's quiz in the "What did you drink while traveling" thread.

My table's glasses will be filled with Brun's "FRV100" and a Finger Lakes perry.
The perry was godawful: a pet nat perry, way too tart and vaguely dirty. To the Fat Sink with it!

Saved the Brun fizz for another day, opened Pernot 2005 Beaune "Clos du Dessus des Marconnets" instead. Very pretty and fragrant and a nice contrast to the heavy traditional meal.

Continued with Gontier 2005 Calvados for the trou Normand and then several desserts.

Small sample sizes and all, but I had heard these good things and finally got around to trying Jouan with the 2019 Gevrey Aux Echezeaux. Delicious but not as 'delicate' as I was expecting. Probably spoke more of 2019 than of Jouan.

Whose perry (just to be able to avoid it in the future)?

We drank a Gaggiano 2018 Bramaterra, which was very nice.

1996 Huet Clos du Bourg demi-sec. more on the austere side than sweet side. good balance. would not wish to age it that much more, but that's personal preference. well received.last 2 bottles opened as first one was corked. sent letter to Mr. Chadderdon asking for a replacement.
