Christmas Eve dinner

Christmas Eve dinner was a success with Beni di Batasiolo Barolo '16 -- Ample aromas of berries (blueberries?) and more, medium body and acidity balanced with good dark fruits, some tobacco, savory, moderate length. [B+ - A-]

Nice pairing with sauteed triglia and arugula salad, calf's liver and cheese polenta, then joyously complementing panettone bread pudding.

Christmas Eve dinner here was unique. Earlier this year, we participated in a University initiative to bring Ukrainian scholars out of their war-torn nation and give them temporary positions here. Tonight, we had 5 of them and their families over to our house for dinner. We started with bread, cheese and potato-cheese varenyky with sour cream. We had a Navarro methode champenoise Gewurtztraminer to accompany them.
Dinner consisted of hot-smoked king salmon, smoked VA ham, roasted potatoes and broccoli. Our son played Santa and gave out presents to the guests. Wines were a 2009 Chevillon NSG VV which, though still largely primary, was lush and vividly fruity and a 2020 Malat “Furst” Grüner Veltliner which was proper but no better. Conversation ranged from the mundane to the political. We were just happy to give them a night of relaxation and good food.

You might warn the politburo to wear their woolens if they’re planning on a midnight visit any time soon. BTW, I had another look at the label and must walk back my last statement: it does have methode champenoise written in red on the bias.

mind you, cooks in california is still labelling their bulk produced bubbly (shite) as not just 'methode champenoise', but as 'champagne'.

Since ‘94, it’s been illegal to sell wine in the EU so labeled if it doesn’t come from Champagne. Producers now will typically use methode classique or methode traditionelle to signify the process used. My guess is that Navarro, like Cook’s and IIRC Korbel, has no intention of selling their product in the EU.

United States bought into this agreement in 2005/2006, with the loophole that estates that had previously used names such as Chablis, Burgundy, Champagne, and 'methode champenoise' were grandfathered in. You still can't sell them in EU, I believe, but you can drink them in West Lafayette despite ominous warnings from the politburo.

And once more I am grateful for the benevolent forebearance of the politburo, though I can’t vouch for my Ukrainian guests in that regard.
