Raymond Trollat obituary

Claude Kolm

Claude Kolm

Whoever would have thought that his passing would receive a substantial article in the NY Times? I remember back 40 years ago, driving through the region and how isolated it was.

Maybe it was Kermit Lynch’s paean to him in Travels on the Wine Route that inspired the NYT obit.

But none for Michel Lapierre. You think Charles Joguet will get in the Times when he dies?

Very sad.

We all have those "ones that got away"...I still remember back in the day when Hart Davis would "clean out" what they considered lowbrow stuff on their retail site - I missed three magnums of '94 Trollat by a couple minutes (they would post their new stuff via eblast)...

Those were the daze...not drinking quite as well nowadays...

Thank you for bringing the news to my attention. No matter what drives the NYT, Trollat's passing is a kind of a milestone and I'm glad it is reported.

According to my limited Google-fu, Gerard Chave is still alive (and in his 70s). If so, he would be the last of the old guard (as I reckon them) in the N Rhone left alive.

Mark; I believe Gérard is 87

Thanks for the correction, Steve. It makes sense since he was already making wine when Kermit met him back in the early '70s.

In which I made a dumb (double) error. Asimov did write an obit for MARCEL Lapierre: https://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/12/dining/12lapierre.html

And I'd guess that is the qualification. If Eric wasn't interested I don't think the NYT would run an obit of Trollat.
